The Development and Management Team of Sarantaporo.gr has taken action to establish wireless access networks in the neighboring villages of Mikro Eleftherochori, Likoudi and Kokkinopilos as part of the OpenWiFi action of GFOSS, which supplied part of the necessary telecommunications equipment.

Wireless networks were first installed and operated in the villages of Mikro Eleftherochori and Lykoudi, on 17 and 18 March 2012 respectively, while the installation of the wireless network in Kokkinopilos took place on 25 March 2012 as an event of the international conference "Battle of the Mesh v.5 - warmup", featuring some of the world's leading open source wireless network programmers!

Mikro Eleftherochori

The proposal for Micro Eleftherochori provided for 10 routers which were all received by GFOSS. The Mikro Eleftherochori Open Access Wireless Network m.eleftherohori-sarantaporo.gr was commissioned on Saturday, March 17, 2012 with the activation of all 10 routers, in cooperation with the village’s cultural organization and the Sarantaporo.gr team.

Likoudi village, Elassona Municipality

The proposal for Likoudi provided for 10 routers, all of which were received by GFOSS. The Lykoudi Wireless Network lykoudi-sarantaporo.gr was commissioned on Sunday, March 18, 2012 with the activation of the first 9 routers (the 10th is ready to be installed wherever there is a coverage gap), in collaboration with the Lykoudi Cultural Association and the Sarantaporo.gr team.

Kokkinopilos village, Elassona Municipality

The Kokkinopilos Proposal provided for 6 routers, which were all received by GFOSS. The Kokkinopilos Network kokkinopilos-sarantaporo.gr launched a pilot operation on Sunday, March 25th with the activation of all 6 routers, in collaboration with the Athens Kokkinopilos Association and the Sarantaporo.gr team. The deployment was part of the agenda of the "Battle of the Mesh v5 - warmup" international conference with the participation of 35 scientists, open source programmers and engineers from all over the world.

The deployment and pilot operation of the networks in the villages of Giannota, Flabouro and Gerania are planned for the near future:

  • The Flambouro proposal provided for 10 routers that were all received by GFOSS. Configuration and pre-configuration of wireless routers is already completed, with deployment and pilot operation expected by the end of June.
  • The Gerania’s proposal provided for 10 routers, all of which were received by the GFOSS. Configuration and pre-configuration of wireless routers is already completed, with deployment and pilot operation expected by the end of June.
  • The proposal for Giannotta, in collaboration with the Giannotta Cultural Association "Nikotsaras", planned the deployment of 10 routers, all of which were received by GFOSS. Configuration and pre-configuration of wireless routers is already completed, with deployment and pilot operation expected by the end of June.
